Skilled Hands Training Center is an active nonprofit workforce development program providing youth and adults with
hands-on training in:

Students participate in structured Saturday training sessions where they gain real-world experience using tools, learning
construction concepts, and building confidence through guided project work.
Our first official 8-week cohort launched May 23, 2026 at the North Dallas Government Center.

2026 Cohort 1 Training Update
July 10, 2026 Cohort - Week 7 From Training to Achievement
This week marked one of the defining moments of Skilled Hands Training Center's inaugural cohort.
After weeks of instruction in safety, measurement, framing, electrical box installation, wire routing, and switch wiring, students completed the electrical systems they had installed within their wall frames. The highlight of the day came when the completed wall systems were connected to live power for the first time. As the switches were operated and the lights illuminated, students experienced the satisfaction of seeing their hard work produce a successful result.
With only one week remaining, students are preparing to complete their wall systems, participate in graduation, and celebrate the successful completion of Skilled Hands Training Center's first eight-week cohort.
June 27, 2026 Cohort - Week 6 Update: Understanding Electricity and Learning from Experience
Week 6 of our inaugural Skilled Hands Training Center cohort focused on strengthening both technical knowledge and professional development.
As with every class, the day began with a safety briefing before students returned to their electrical training stations. Rather than simply completing the wiring, the emphasis shifted to understanding how electricity actually flows through a circuit.
Using the analogy of water flowing through a pipe, students learned how electrical current travels from the power source through the switches, receptacles, and light fixture before returning to the source to complete the circuit. This visual approach helped reinforce that successful electrical work requires understanding the principles behind the installation—not simply following wiring diagrams.
We were also pleased to welcome industry guest speaker, former VP of Paragon Roofing, Jim Stalcup, who arrived early enough to observe the students working on their projects. After touring the training stations and seeing the progress the students had made, he shared his own career journey and the lessons he learned throughout decades in the construction industry.
As students introduced themselves and explained why they enrolled in the program, Mr. Stalcup recognized that many were not necessarily pursuing careers in the skilled trades. He adjusted his presentation accordingly, emphasizing that qualities such as integrity, reliability, communication, work ethic, and lifelong learning are valuable regardless of the profession a person ultimately chooses.
The students remained engaged throughout his presentation, asking thoughtful questions and taking advantage of the opportunity to learn from someone with extensive real-world experience.
Although the electrical wiring was not completed during this session, the class made significant progress in understanding the operation of a complete circuit. Following the Fourth of July holiday, students will return to finish wiring their training stations, test their completed circuits using a 12-volt power supply, and then transition into the next phase of construction.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Jim Stalcup for investing his time and experience in our students. His willingness to mentor the next generation reflects the spirit of community partnership that Skilled Hands Training Center is committed to building.
Each week continues to move us closer to our mission of preparing youth and adults with practical trade skills, workforce readiness, and the confidence to succeed in whatever career path they choose.
June 13 2026 Cohort - Week 4 Highlights: Students Bring Their Training Walls to Life with Electrical Rough-I
Skilled Hands Training Center completed another exciting session as students progressed from framing into the world of residential electrical systems.
The day began with a safety meeting and a classroom discussion covering the fundamentals of electrical circuits and the importance of understanding how electricity flows through a complete path. Students asked thoughtful questions and explored the concepts behind switches, outlets, and electrical routing.
The class then transitioned into hands-on work, where students installed electrical boxes, drilled pathways through the framing, routed electrical cable, and began wiring outlets and switches into the wall systems they had built during previous sessions.
Electrical training challenged students to think beyond following instructions and begin understanding the purpose behind each connection. This critical thinking process is an important part of developing confidence and competence in any skilled trade.
Although the electrical rough-in was not completed during this session, significant progress was made, and the students will continue refining their wiring skills during the next class. The goal is not simply to complete a project but to ensure students understand the principles behind the work they are performing.
The growth of our students continues to be impressive. From the first day of learning safety and measurement to now working with framed walls and electrical components, each session builds upon the previous one.
We are grateful for the continued enthusiasm of our students and the support of our families, volunteers, and community. Every class brings us one step closer to our mission of building skills, confidence, and futures.
Skilled Hands Training Center Cohort 1 – May 30, 2026 -Week 2: Framing Layout and Wall Assembly
Skilled Hands Training Center successfully completed Week 2 of its inaugural 8-week workforce development cohort on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
The day's instruction focused on framing layout, material preparation, cutting procedures, teamwork, and wall assembly. Students were divided into two construction teams, with each team selecting a foreman to help coordinate activities and encourage leadership development throughout the project.
The session began with a safety briefing and orientation for a new student participant. After reviewing safety expectations and project objectives, students began laying out wall framing components, measuring and marking lumber, cutting materials to length, and assembling full wall sections.
Throughout the day, students demonstrated excellent teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. The atmosphere was energetic and positive, with students actively encouraging one another while learning practical construction techniques. By the end of the session, both teams successfully completed their wall frames and proudly participated in project celebrations and photo opportunities recognizing their accomplishments.
In addition to the construction activities, students participated in the program's Life Skills component led by Elder Ware. The session generated strong engagement, discussion, and interaction among participants, reinforcing the program's commitment to developing both practical trade skills and personal growth.
Week 2 also provided an encouraging reminder of the community interest surrounding Skilled Hands Training Center. During the training session, an individual attending another event within the facility visited the classroom to learn more about the program. After observing the students and discussing the mission of Skilled Hands Training Center, he expressed interest in participating in a future cohort and completed an enrollment form.
The day was extensively documented through photos and video, capturing student progress, teamwork, leadership development, and project completion. These materials will help showcase the impact of the program as Skilled Hands Training Center continues to expand its workforce development and mentorship efforts throughout the Dallas community.
As Founder, I am grateful for the opportunity to pass on skills that I have spent a lifetime learning. Watching students gain confidence, work together, and take pride in building something with their own hands continues to confirm the importance of hands-on skilled trades education.
We look forward to continuing Cohort 1 as students progress into the next phase of construction training and further develop the skills, confidence, and work ethic that will serve them well in the future.

What stood out most was watching students become more comfortable, engaged, and confident throughout the day. By the end of class, students were actively participating, asking questions, and helping organize and clean the workspace as a team.
This program was created to provide practical skills, mentorship, confidence-building, and workforce exposure for young people and adults interested in the skilled trades.
This is only the beginning, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

Why I Founded Skilled Hands Training Center
Message from the founder
Growing up, I discovered the power of working with my hands — fixing, building, and solving real-world problems. That path led me to become a precision machinist, handyman, and business owner. But the most meaningful work I’ve ever done began when I became a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
One of my Little Brothers was just eight years old when we were matched. He lived with his grandmother and had a deep love for trains. Every Saturday, we’d explore train yards, visit model shops, or build a sprawling train set that eventually filled a room in my house. I always told him, “If you can dream it, you can build it.”
Years later, long after we’d lost touch, I got a surprise phone call. It was him. He was now working for Northern Pacific Rail, married, with four kids — living the dream he’d once spoken of as a child.
That moment reminded me how powerful consistency, mentorship, and hands-on guidance can be.
Skilled Hands Training Center was built on that belief — that with the right tools, support, and encouragement, we can change lives. We’re here to restore confidence, unlock potential, and give people the skills they need to build a better future — one project, one student, one story at a time.
